Sable Brushes: construction and behavior
Sable is a traditional name used for very soft natural-hair brushes; high-grade watercolor brushes are often associated with kolinsky hair from a mustelid rather than the common sable animal. These hairs can form a fine point while holding a substantial amount of water.
The combination of a large belly and fine point is valuable in watercolor because the brush can carry a wash and still return to detail. Natural-hair sourcing and cost have also encouraged sophisticated synthetic substitutes.
