Hog Bristle Brushes: construction and behavior
Hog bristle is a stiff natural brush hair traditionally valued for oil painting. Individual bristles are resilient and often split at the tips into small flags, which can hold and distribute thick paint.
The stiffness makes hog bristle useful for pushing viscous paint, scumbling and leaving visible brush texture. It is less suited to extremely smooth delicate washes. Cleaning matters because dried oil paint at the ferrule can permanently spread the bundle.
