Ochres and Earth Pigments: construction and behavior
Ochres are earth pigments colored mainly by iron oxides and iron oxyhydroxides mixed with clay and other minerals. Yellow ochre can be heated to produce redder iron-oxide colors.
Earth pigments are among the oldest known colorants and are generally valued for lightfastness and chemical stability. Their subdued chroma makes them important for flesh mixtures, landscape and underpainting as well as prehistoric image making.
