Rabbit-Skin Glue: construction and behavior
Rabbit-skin glue is a collagen-based animal glue historically used in painting preparation, especially as a size for fabric and as a binder in traditional gesso. It is prepared by swelling the dry glue in water and warming it gently.
The material is hygroscopic and can become brittle, so its movement with humidity is a conservation concern, particularly on flexible canvas. Modern synthetic sizing materials are often chosen to reduce those risks.
